The aluminium 5K that is not an Apple.

The P27Z is the monitor for the desk that does both. A 27 inch 5K panel at 218 pixels per inch for work that needs the detail, a 180Hz refresh for everything after hours, and a full aluminium body that earns its place in a room rather than apologising for itself. Kuycon's hybrid model, sourced directly by Nourish Peak and backed with our own returns and warranty.

Why we chose it

There is a gap in this category and almost nobody fills it, beautiful, 60Hz, no HDR, and a stand that only tilts. Buy a 5K that games and you are buying plastic with a metal-look foot.

The P27Z is the one that does both. Same 5120 x 2880 panel and the same 218 PPI as the Studio Display, the same 600 nits, in the same material, but with 180Hz, HDR10, FreeSync and a stand that lifts, rotates and tilts as standard.

The picture

5120 x 2880 across 27 inches works out at 218 pixels per inch, which is the density at which text stops having edges. The panel is Ultra Fast IPS covering 99% sRGB and 98% DCI-P3 at 10-bit for 1.07 billion colours, rated to 600 nits full screen with 1500:1 native contrast and HDR10.

Every unit is calibrated at the factory to a Delta E under 2, and the report ships on the USB drive in the box rather than being a claim on the packaging. The glass is fully laminated mirror AR with optical compensation film, so there is no air gap between panel and surface and colour holds at an angle. It is a glossy finish: sharper and deeper than matte, and more reflective in a bright room. Worth knowing before it arrives.

The sound

A six-driver stereo array is built in, dual channel, tuned for both ends of the range rather than just voices. It is not a substitute for real speakers, but it is a long way past the single tinny driver most monitors include as an afterthought, and it means a second desk does not need a second set of speakers.

The connections

One USB-C uplink carries picture, data and 100W Power Delivery on a single cable, charging a connected laptop while it drives the screen. Behind it: DisplayPort 2.1, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two further USB-C ports for peripherals, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Two OTG converters are included. VESA 100 x 100 if you would rather arm-mount it, and the stand lifts, rotates and tilts if you would not.

About the 180Hz

Worth being straight about this. 5K at 180Hz is a very large amount of bandwidth, and Kuycon states plainly that it needs a capable dedicated graphics card. On a system that cannot sustain it the monitor steps down to 144Hz or 165Hz rather than failing. If you are driving it from a laptop on integrated graphics, plan on the lower figure.

The dual mode is the answer to that. A press of the left button on the remote switches the panel to 2560 x 1440 at 330Hz, which most machines can drive, and back again when you are done.
