One speaker that comes apart into two.

Most portable speakers are a single box playing mono, no matter what the listing calls it. This is a pair. The two units clip together magnetically into one column you can carry in a hand, and pull apart into a left and a right channel you can put at opposite ends of a table. Stereo only works when the two channels are physically separated, which is the one thing a single-box speaker can never do.

Why we chose it

The magnet is doing two jobs, and the second one is the interesting one. It holds the two halves together for carrying, and it also sticks either unit to any metal surface: a fridge door, a tent pole, the side of a van, a bike frame. That is a genuinely different way to place a speaker, and it costs nothing extra to have.

We were also drawn to what it does not pretend to be. The maker rates it at 5 W per unit, 10 W across the pair, and we have quoted that rather than the inflated figures this design is often sold under elsewhere. It is a small speaker that sounds like a good small speaker.

Three ways to play it

Bluetooth 5.4 for a phone, a TF card slot for music without a phone at all, and an FM radio built in. The mode button cycles between the three, so it still works when there is no signal and no one wants to hand over their playlist.

Key features

  • Two separate speakers that join magnetically into one column, or split into a left and right stereo pair
  • 52 mm full-range driver in each unit, 5 W each, 10 W across the pair
  • Magnetic base holds either unit to a fridge, a tent pole, a vehicle panel or any steel surface
  • Bluetooth 5.4, range from 10 meters, pre-paired so the two halves find each other automatically
  • Three modes: Bluetooth, TF card and FM radio
  • RGB ring light around each driver, breathing in time with the music, with switchable light modes
  • 2000 mAh battery in each unit, 4000 mAh across the pair, charged over USB-C at 5 V, 2A
  • 4 to 6 hours of real listening. The maker rates up to 12 hours at 60 percent volume
  • Recharges in about 3 hours
  • Buttons for volume, track, play, power, light mode, source and TWS pairing. No app required
  • Charging port and card slot sit behind a hinged cover, which keeps dust and grit out
  • Woven mesh over an ABS body, 80 x 80 x 102 mm per unit
  • Black, blue or red

Living with it

The two halves arrive already paired to each other, so powering both on is usually all it takes. Double tapping the minus button breaks the pair when you only want one, and joins them again when you want both. Keep the port cover closed when it is outside, and treat it as splash-tolerant rather than waterproof, because the maker publishes no water rating and we will not invent one.
