Optical glass, not a software guess.

Your phone already takes a decent portrait. It does it by estimating which pixels are the subject and blurring the rest, and it is very good at that until it meets curly hair, glasses or a busy background. This kit puts a real 105 mm optical lens in front of the camera instead, so the separation between subject and background is made in the glass rather than decided afterwards.

The grip is the other half, and it is the half people underestimate. A machined aluminium body, a leather-wrapped handle, and a two-stage shutter you half-press to focus and press again to fire. The phone stops being a slab you tap and becomes something you hold and operate.

Why we chose it

Most phone lens attachments are glass on a clip and most phone grips are a handle with a Bluetooth button. This is one system, and it is built in stages: an aluminium adapter plate slides into the case's own camera frame, the lens mounts onto that, and the hood twists on last. Nothing is aligned by eye.

The optics are where the money went: five elements in three groups, using fluorite-grade ED glass, rated at 200 lp/mm with distortion held under 2 percent. ED glass is what stops colour fringing at high-contrast edges, and it is not what you normally find screwed onto a phone.

The grip earns its place separately. The same battery that runs the shutter also charges the phone wirelessly through the magnetic mount, so on a long shoot the thing in your hand is topping up the thing you are shooting with.

What the numbers mean

The lens gives a genuine 105 mm portrait perspective, the focal length portrait photographers have used for decades because of what it does to a face. Set your main camera to 2.2x and the lens does the rest.

The 200 mm figure is a multiplier, not a second lens. It doubles the phone's own 100 mm telephoto to roughly 200 mm equivalent. The gain over the phone's native 8x is real, because this is optical rather than a crop, but it is worth understanding before you buy rather than after.

Living with it

The case is sized to the phone, so choose Pro or Pro Max carefully at checkout. iPhone 16 Pro owners take the 17 Pro option, and 16 Pro Max owners take the 17 Pro Max.

For the 105 mm look, set the main camera to 2.2x zoom. Charge the grip before the first outing, it takes about two hours and the four dots on the base tell you where it is. Keep the cap on in the bag and the hood on outdoors, and clean the front element with a blower and a microfibre cloth rather than a shirt. It arrives as two boxes, the grip and the lens.
