How to Choose a USB-C Docking Station

Port count isn't the whole story, and neither dock in our own lineup solves the same problem. One folds an SSD bay into the housing, the other adds a negative ion air purifier and Ethernet. Here's what actually determines whether a USB-C dock earns its place on your desk for years, not months, and which of the two fits your setup.

A docking station is one of the few desk objects you'll touch every single day, which makes it a strange place to cut corners. Most buying guides for these devices lead with port count. That's the wrong place to start, and it's also the wrong way to compare our own two docks, which solve genuinely different problems.

Start with power delivery, not ports

The number that matters most is the wattage delivered to your laptop, not the number of USB-A slots. A dock rated for 100W USB-C Power Delivery can fully charge most laptops, including 16-inch MacBook Pros, through the same cable carrying your data and video. Anything under 60W means you're still reaching for a separate charger, which defeats the purpose of a dock in the first place. Both docks below are rated at 100W.

Check the display bandwidth, not just the port type

An HDMI port doesn't guarantee a sharp picture. Look for 4K at 60Hz specifically; many budget docks cap out at 4K30, which shows as a visibly less fluid image for video and scrolling. Also confirm your laptop supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over its USB-C port; without it, no dock will output video, regardless of its own specifications.

Decide if you need built-in storage

Some docks fold an M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD enclosure directly into the housing, turning a spare drive into a fast, cable-free external volume. This is worth it if you're already sitting on an unused M.2 drive from a laptop upgrade; if not, it's an added cost for a feature you won't use. Confirm the enclosure supports your drive's specific key type (M-key vs. B&M-key) before assuming compatibility.

Data speed and Ethernet

For external drives and card readers, USB 3.1 (10Gbps) is the current practical minimum for fast transfers. If your work depends on a stable wired connection, wireless-only docks force you back onto WiFi; a dock with built-in Gigabit Ethernet removes that dependency entirely.

Build quality determines lifespan

Docks run warm under sustained 100W loads. An anodised aluminium shell dissipates heat better than plastic and tends to outlast it structurally. If a dock's build quality isn't mentioned anywhere in its listing, that's usually the answer.

Which one should you choose

If you already have a spare M.2 drive or want fast portable storage folded into your setup with no extra cable, the Nova is built for exactly that, and it's the pricier of the two by €13. If you want the fuller connectivity set, Ethernet, more USB-A, an audio jack, plus a genuinely different feature in the negative ion purifier, and you don't need built-in storage, the Air Purifier dock covers more ground for less. Neither replaces the other; pick based on whether storage or connectivity-plus-air is the gap in your current desk.

Frequently asked questions

Do either of these include a storage drive?
No. The Nova has a built-in M.2 NVMe/SATA enclosure, but you supply your own drive. The Air Purifier dock has no storage enclosure at all.

Will either fully charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
Yes, both are rated at 100W USB-C Power Delivery, sufficient for most laptops including 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Do I need a separate video adapter?
No, both output 4K at 60Hz directly over HDMI. Your laptop's USB-C port does need to support DisplayPort Alt Mode; without it, no dock will output video regardless of its own specs.

Which one has Ethernet?
Only the 10-in-1 Air Purifier dock includes Gigabit Ethernet. The Nova is data and display only, no wired network port.

Is the air purifier safe to touch while running?
The maker's guidance is not to touch the ion outlets while the purification function is active, since static electricity can accumulate there.
